Welcome to the College of Nursing.

A career in nursing can open the door to a number of professional opportunities. At AIU Health Science Center's College of Nursing we educate our students to be leaders in the healthcare system providing the highest quality nursing care. College of Nursing offers two programs leading to Bachelor of Nursing Science (BSN) degree. Our faculty has the knowledge and expertise in evidence-based nursing practice. Our curriculum provides learning opportunities in a wide variety of nursing practice settings, including hospitals, clinics and health centers operated by Government of The Gambia. We are committed to helping our students succeed in their nursing education. The aim of the nursing programs at the various levels is to enable nurses:

  • To assume responsibilities as professional competent nurses and midwives at basic level and to provide preventive, curative and rehabilitation services.
  • To make independent decisions in nursing situations and to protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health.
  • To function in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice.
  • To assume the role of teachers, supervisor & manager in clinical/public health settings.
  • To assess health status, identify nursing needs, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients/clients that contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities.
  • To demonstrate competency in techniques of nursing based on concepts and principles from selected areas of nursing, physical, biological and behavioral sciences.
  • To demonstrate skills in communication and interpersonal relationship.
  • To demonstrate leadership qualities and decision - making abilities in various situations
  • To demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and groups in community health settings.
  • To practice ethical values in their personal and professional life.
  • To recognize the need for continued learning for their personal and professional development.



AIU Health Science Centers in the Gambia, College of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). It is a professional program that builds on a foundation of knowledge in science, humanities and related professional disciplines. BSN graduates are prepared as general clinical practitioners. BSN coursework emphasizes critical thinking, health and human functioning, care and therapeutics, person/environment fit and health care resources. Clinical experiences occur in a wide variety of hospital and community settings serving diverse populations; role development, decision making, health status evaluation, and scholarship are emphasized. The BSN program is highly competitive, and demands rigorous academics combined with experiential learning.

Curriculum

AIU Health Science Centers at the Gambia, College of Nursing offers Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) for Registered Nurse (RN). The program equips the student with knowledge, skills, values and prepares the student for a professional practice in a variety of settings. BSN graduates are prepared as general clinical practitioners. BSN coursework emphasizes critical thinking, health and human functioning, care and therapeutics, person/environment fit and health care resources. The BSN program is highly competitive, and demands rigorous academics combined with experiential learning. Certain credit hours are allocated for their RN education and experience. A minimum of 100 hours is required to complete the BSN degree.

Curriculum

BSN Anesthesia

A BSN specilization that focuses on training nurses to provide anesthesia care to patients during surgical and other medical procedures. Students learn advanced pharmacology, physiology, and clinical skills to administer anesthesia safely and effectively. Graduates work in operating rooms, labor and delivery units, and other healthcare settings, collaborating with anesthesiologists to provide comprehensive anesthesia services.

BSN Perioperative

A BSN specilization that prepares nurses to work in the perioperative setting, managing patient care before, during, and after surgical operations. Coursework covers topics like preoperative assessment, intraoperative nursing interventions, and postoperative care. Students gain hands-on experience in simulated and clinical environments, developing skills in sterilization, surgical assisting, and patient advocacy. Graduates are equipped to work in various surgical specialties, such as general surgery, orthopedics, and cardiovascular surgery, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

BSN Psychiatry

A BSN specialization that specializes in psychiatric and mental health nursing, equipping nurses to provide comprehensive care for patients with mental health conditions. Curriculum focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of mental illnesses, including psychopharmacology and therapeutic communication techniques. Students also learn about crisis intervention, group therapy, and community-based mental health services. Graduates are prepared to work in psychiatric hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, and other settings, promoting holistic well-being for individuals with mental health needs.

BSN Pediatric

A BSN specialization that focuses on the unique healthcare needs of children, preparing nurses to work in pediatric settings such as hospitals, clinics, and community environments. Coursework covers topics like child development, pediatric pharmacology, and family-centered care. Students gain clinical experience in various pediatric specialties, including neonatology, pediatric oncology, and pediatric emergency care. Graduates are equipped to provide developmentally appropriate nursing interventions, advocate for the rights of children and their families, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to promote optimal health outcomes for pediatric patients..

BSN Midwifery

A BSN specilization that trains nurses to become certified nurse-midwives, providing holistic care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Curriculum covers topics like prenatal care, labor and delivery management, newborn care, and women's health promotion. Students develop clinical skills in areas such as prenatal assessment, labor support, and postpartum care through simulation labs and supervised clinical rotations. Graduates are prepared to work in birth centers, hospitals, and community-based settings, empowering women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and promoting positive birthing experiences.
